Officers of the Main Customs Department for Air Transport prevented an attempt to move a substantial amount of foreign currency across the country’s customs border without declaring it.
A citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan travelling on the Baku–Berlin flight did not declare foreign currency to the customs authority in advance, either orally, in writing or electronically, when entering the customs control zone. As his suitcase passed through the X-ray machine, images of suspicious items were observed on the monitor.
The passenger was then questioned orally and stated that the bag contained 10,000 euros. During the inspection, however, 150 banknotes with a face value of 200 euros each — 30,000 euros in total — were found inside the bag, wrapped in a transparent cellophane package and not declared to the customs authority in advance orally, electronically or in writing.
An investigation into the incident is under way.
